Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) yang menjadi mercu tanda Pulau Pinang bakal diterangi cahaya lampu limpah berwarna emas selama sebulan, sebagai simbol sokongan Kerajaan Negeri hari ini terhadap usaha Persatuan Sahabat Kanak-Kanak Kanser Wilayah Utara (FOCCAN) selama ini.
Semasa berucap, Ketua Menteri, Y.A.B. Tuan Chow Kon Yeow berkata bahawa pihaknya sangat terharu dengan inisiatif penganjuran Program ‘Shimmering In Gold’ sempena Bulan Kesedaran Kanser Kanak-Kanak Seluruh Dunia sepanjang September.
“Saya amat terharu kerana program ini secara langsung memberikan pendedahan mengenai jenis kanser, kaedah rawatan dan penjagaan kepada penghidap kanser,” jelasnya pada penganjuan program berkaitan di sini pada 1 September 2024.
Menurut Exco Kewangan, Pembangunan Tanah & Ekonomi dan Komunikasi itu lagi, sejak tahun 2016, FOCCAN telah banyak membantu serta memberi sokongan kepada pesakit kanser kanak-kanak serta keluarga mereka tanpa mengira bangsa, agama atau keturunan.
“Sehingga kini, terdapat lebih 1,800 kanak-kanak pengidap kanser bersama FOCCAN yang menerima sokongan holistik dari segi kewangan, peralatan perubatan dan barangan keperluan peribadi,” ujarnya yang juga Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Padang Kota merangkap Ahli Parlimen Batu Kawan.
Kon Yeow memberitahu bahawa leukemia, kanser otak, kanser tulang, kanser limfoma, kanser neuroblastoma, kanser hati dan kanser buah pinggang merupakan antara jenis kanser kanak-kanak yang sering kali menyerang kanak-kanak.
“Malah menurut Pengarah Perubatan Persatuan Kanser Kebangsaan Malaysia (NCSM), Dr. M. Muralitharan, sekurang-kurangnya lima (5) kanak-kanak didiagnosis dengan pelbagai jenis kanser setiap hari, dan angka ini dijangka akan meningkat sekiranya masyarakat kurang kesedaran mengenai isu ini.
“Dengan perkembangan teknologi dan kemajuan rawatan sedia ada, peluang kesembuhan boleh mencapai sehingga 80 peratus jika kanak-kanak tersebut mendapatkan rawatan awal di hospital,” ulasnya lanjut.
Berucap sebelum itu, Pengerusi FOCCAN, Maznah Tayib merakamkan penghargaan kepada semua pemegang taruh termasuk Kerajaan Negeri hari ini atas sokongan kepada usaha pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) berkenaan selama ini.
Exco Belia, Sukan dan Kesihatan, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen yang juga ADUN Padang Lalang; Pengerusi Penganjur Majlis ‘Shimmering in Gold’, Benjamin Tiang; Ketua Penolong Pengarah Kanan Jabatan kesihatan Negeri Pulau Pinang (JKNPP), Dr. Mohd. Taufiq Omar dan beberapa wakil NGO berkenaan turut menyertai majlis tersebut.
